About Me
Dev Background
I am a self taught front-end web developer who's been working in the industry full time for 6 years. I graduated from univserity with degrees is Natural Resources and Forestry and found a (kind of) related job while while my now wife was finishing her Physical Therapy degree. I worked as a building inpector for asbestos and on a drill rig doing soil sampling. While I enjoyed being outdoors, I found the work wasn't fulfilling, dangerous, and didn't pay well. A close friend suggested I try web developement. I started learning on my own, and knew early on it's what I wanted to do. In hindsight, I should have taken computer science classes in college, but I didn't know what I wanted to do at the time. After about a year, I ended up getting an intership then a full time job.
I fell in love with web development because it allows me to be creative while also solving problems. I always strive to learn and improve as a developer and as a person, and this industry is a great mix of that. While it can be overwhelming always trying to learn the new hotness, I've settled in and found given time and energy I can learn most things, because I've tried to work on and undesrand the fundementals.
Now that's I've worked in the industry for a few years, I've found that I really enjoy building design systems and reusable components to help streamline the workflow of myself and other devs. Design Systems can help tear down the walls between design and development and help teams work together more efficiently.
Personal Background
Outside of development I'm an avid running, an occasional baker, twin dad, D&D player, and gamer if time allows. I've ran mutliple ultramarathons with the eventual goal of running a 100 miles race. My boys are 5 and also love to run and go camping, which we're spending more and more time doing.
I'd be remised if I didn't express graduated for my position in life. I feel like I lucked into web development. Yes, I've worked hard to get where I am, but I've also had a lot of help along the way. My wounderful wife, has been a great support on my journey. My friend Kyle who suggested I try web development, in the first place and acted as a mentor for many years.
It's my goal to give back through this site. I've always found writing as a great release for me, even though I've neglected now for many years. I plan to write about web development, design systems, and dev related things some technical, others less so. I also plan to write about my running and anything else that comes to mind.
